Most diets are not easy, however I am going to show you why most fail and then how you can find and research easy diets. According to research that was done January 2007 by the research center at Stanford, most diets were designed to fail. A document called A to Z Weight Loss trial was made available from a study they did on weight loss. They studied 311 women and had them follow some of the more popular diet programs. The Ornish Diet, The Zone Diet, The Learn Diet and the Atkins Diet were used in the study.
Each woman was randomly assigned one of the diets and provided with all the documentation on how to follow the diet.
In addition to the documentation, the women were required to sit in on eight classes each one hour long that was lead by a certified dietitian. This was to assure that each woman understood the diet and how to follow it. Once the classes were complete the women were released to follow each diet for 1 year. Just the thought that the diets were so complex that it took eight hours to understand them discourages me from trying them. Then I wonder how much the average person that attempts the diets spend trying to understand them?
During the first few months, most of the participants lost a good amount of weight. However, when the year came to an end, none of the women averaged more than 10 pounds of weight loss.
The challenge was not whether the plans worked because each showed good results in the beginning. What the research did show was that after two months it was difficult to continue the diets. Had each participant continued the diets like they had in the beginning they could have had the same weight loss they did in the first two months.
The diets were just too difficult to use to continue to be consistent on them. Most diets are similar in that there is food tracking, eating certain things while needing to stay away from others. Most diets have a list of thing you cannot eat that is much longer than those you can eat. Most well known diets are not easy diets.
The University of Massachusetts did a follow up of the study June 2008, specifically based on the first study. They were looking at whether complying with the diets rules were the problem the outcomes were so poor. “Dietary Adherence and Weight Loss Success Amoung Overweight Women: Results From The A To Z Weight Loss Study” was the name. Search it on the web if you would like.
They found in fact, that a single woman out of the 181 who completed the first study, followed the diet for a year like she was taught. Out of 181, women who started a diet plan, 180 women abandoned their diet within a year. The study also revealed that the better the single woman followed the diet plan, the better her results were.
After 8 hours of studying a diet with a dietitian and understanding what they needed to do, all but a single lady quit and failed.
The complexity of a diet can be a huge factor on how successful someone can be following it. The study proves that if you find a hard diet to follow you will most certainly fail at it it at some point, if not inside the first year. The study also suggests that if you would like to succeed at a diet, you want to look at easy diets with not many rules.
Components of Easy Diets
As I have discussed before, weight loss does not need to be hard or keep you away from foods you love. If you find easy diets that are simple to follow you can have great success. By using easy diets, sticking to them is less challenging and fun. Remember, you want to stay fit and trim for your entire life not just a few month or a year. Can you imagine being on a hard-to-follow eating plan for the rest of your life?
When I was researching easy diets, I needed to find one that fit into my lifestyle and one I could enjoy for the rest of my life. That is when I found Eat Stop Eat. Each week you take a break from eating several times and the remainder of the week you eat what you enjoy. Once you try it once you will be hooked and know that you can keep this up for the rest of your life without failure. Easy Diets Do Not Include OCE
OCE is a term that means Obsessive Complusive Eating. OCE is a pattern of eating that makes many diets hard to follow and continue. When you are looking for easy diets check and see if they meet the OCE criteria below. If you find any of the OCE behaviors below, steer clear of it because like the studies above suggest you have more of a chance to fail at them.
Here are the 8 OCE factors:
1. There are times during the day when you can or cannot eat.
2. It involves eating foods you do not like.
3. There is a number of foods you cannot eat.
4. It emphasises some foods as weight loss foods
5. It has a large focus whether or not to eat carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fruits and vegetables
6. There is no emphasis on how to keep on the plan for life
7. It focuses on preparing and carrying particular foods with you daily or traveling
8. The plan is very rigid
